Buy – Shopping in Krabi

Shopaholics can enjoy their retail therapy in a variety of interesting ways in Krabi, from souvenir hunting in local markets to grabbing a designer bargain in the sophisticated shopping malls. And, as if you needed any incentive, spend more than 5,000 baht on local goods and you can claim back the VAT upon departure!

If you are after traditional Krabi handicrafts, then the markets of Krabi Town are a great place to begin – it’s fun trying to negotiate a good price with the shrewd vendors who make a sport out of haggling and you’ll come away with some novel gifts. There are many unusual arts and crafts shops throughout Krabi too -  look out for workshops funded by government schemes, where you can pick up a range of hand made products expertly crafted from wood, bamboo, cane, ceramics, paper and silk. Intricate Batik work is a Krabi specialty and purchasing from local studios helps encourage an important cottage industry.

You can obtain a whole host of goodies including souvenirs, beach goods and fake designer products in the small shops and kiosks of Ao Nang, whilst the laid back and slightly Bohemian resort of Railay East is home to a number of second hand bookshops, just perfect for browsing. For more up market purchases visit the recently opened Outlet Village where you can pick up fashion items and sportswear at discount prices. The Tesco Lotus Mall near Krabi Town boasts a number of decent shops, a food court and a even a multiplex cinema, in addition to the supermarket of the same name.
